PRO-LIFE DEMOCRATS LEAD NATIONWIDE BIPARTISAN EFFORT TO SAVE THE HYDE AMENDMENT
 Urges Support for Poor Families

Washington, D.C. Democrats For Life of America is partnering with Students for Life of America in Philadelphia, PA, and Akron, OH at a rally tomorrow (Friday, July 9th 11am) to urge lawmakers to save the bipartisan and longstanding Hyde Amendment that has been in effect since 1976. DFLA is also urging members of Congress to sign the #SaveHyde Pledge at dozens of sites of Democratic lawmakers who have previously supported Hyde or have identified themselves as Pro-Life Democrats. They will be at the offices of Brendan Boyle in Philadelphia, PA, and Tim Ryan in Akron, OH.

“Tomorrow, pro-life advocates around the country will be rallying around the nation to urge their legislators to sign the #SaveHyde Pledge,” said Dan Green, National Communications Director of DFLA. “The Hyde Amendment has saved over 2 million lives. It has been a longstanding bipartisan compromise. We must protect it.”

On March 11th, President Biden signed into law the first bill in 45 years that did not include the Hyde Amendment - a legislative rider that prevents taxpayer-funded abortion. His recently introduced budget also left out Hyde.

“We were disappointed and disheartened that the Biden Budget did not include Hyde protections,” said Kristen Day, Executive Director of Democrats For Life. “We need to redouble our efforts to ensure that our legislators recognize and realize that many women do not want abortion funding nor should this be the government’s preferred response to an unplanned pregnancy. We should be protecting the poor in our country and giving them real options for pregnancy, not taxpayer-funded abortions."

Guttmacher Institute statistics show that states that fund abortion with taxpayer funds have higher abortion rates, in most cases, double the national average. The study also found that further abortion funding often targets low-income and minority communities.

“Black women are 3.4 times as likely as white women to have their pregnancy end in abortion,” said Terrisa Bukovinac, President of DFLA. “Targeting women, particularly minority women for paid abortions, does nothing to solve the underlying issues of poverty and lack of support.”

We are urging the following 12 Democratic U.S. Representatives to save the Hyde Amendment:

Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH)
Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-OH)
Congressman Jim Langevin (D-RI)
Congressman Steve Lynch (D-MA)
Congressman Sanford Bishop (D-GA)
Congressman Mike Doyle (D-PA)
Congressman Jim Cooper (D-TN)
Congressman Brendan Boyle (D-PA)
Congressman Connor Lamb (D-PA)
Congressman Matt Cartwright (D-PA)
Congressman Troy Carter (D-LA)
Congressman Henry Cuellar (D-TX)
